Vox Nostra, De Futura, and Other News

I haven't updated this blog in a while, as I have been taking a break from listening to Magma. I am poking my head out of the sand to give you a few pieces of news.

First, I will be at the Soleil Zeuhl Festival on September 18. I am so excited about this festival, created by the hardest working man in the world of Zeuhl, Alain Lebon. 4 great bands and good vibes. We tend to organize various Zeuhl Meals, so if you are going to be in Paris for this festival and care to share a meal with fellow loonies, let me know.

Second, I have been trying to get my fix of Zeuhl without having to think about Christian Vander.

I have been listening a lot to Vox Nostra, and band led by Pierre Minvielle, with Jean-Claude Delachat (formerly of Eider Stellaire) on guitar. They sing totally in Latin, but the compositions evoke classic Magma. Check them out here:

I recommend the song Doloris Puer to start with.

The Vox Nostra Facebook page is here:

Also, a great version of De Futura, arranged for an ensemble of cellos:

The SIOR Band on Russian TV (Unplugged)

From our friends in the SIOR Band. Their famous tribute to Magma on a Russian TV show (oops ... am I right in saying "Russian"? I think that I need to say "Ukranian")

New on DIME - Magma in Charente, November 1972

Magma - Charente 1972-11-xx (aka Soussignac 1972) AUD

Line-up: Christian Vander, Klaus Blasquiz, Stündëhr, Jean Luc Manderlier, Jean Pierre Lembert

Lineage: master cassette > CDR > flac

Disc 1:
01. Undia
02. Ki Iahl O Liahk
03. Soi Soi
04. Band Introduction - MDK intro

Disc 2:
01. MDK

This tape has circulated among a closed group of Magma collectors for some years now. I think it is time to let it out of the bag. The tape has circulated as "Soussignac 1972" labelled as being from April, but the line-up and setlist clearly points towards this being from November 1972 instead. The show was recorded in the region of Charente, and as the Magma gig history lists a show in Soussignac (which is in the region of Charente) in April, this seems to be why it was considered by some to be from April. It is in fact from November. The exact date and venue have been the topic for speculation but are in the end still not verified

The setlist is exceptional, as is the playing. Early Magma like this is hard to find, so here is your chance to hear a live set of one of the best (IMHO) Magma phases and line ups. The band really tears it up on this one, with long stretched out improvisations. Priceless!

Cover Version of Klaus Kombalad

Performed on February 21, 2013 by the group Axis 68-72. It seems that this band specializes in cover tunes of French rock groups from 1968-1972. If they want to do a cover version of Mekanik Machine, I guess that the band will have to change its name.

Enjoy a tribute to one of the classic periods of Magma history ....

Big News From Alain Lebon... And I'll Be There!!!

(From a post today on Progressive Ears from Alain Lebon of the Soleil Zeuhl label)

A few hours ago today I confirmed the booking of the hall for Sept. 18th (wednesday) : LES INSTANTS CHAVIRES. It's gonna be in Paris, very easily accessible by tube. A small place (70-100 with 2/3 seated). We'll very soon build a dedicated web page and register the first reservations.

Line-up : UNIT WAIL / NEOM / SCHERZOO / SETNA (btw, their new CD will be available sometime in February). Possibly an additional surprise band. More details soon....
A.

I am definitely going to fly to Paris to see this unbelievable show, then take a train or car or mule-train to Toulouse to go to RIO 2013.

Anyone else in?
