Magma - Grenoble 1975

Another rare tape has been unearthed from our favorite French Gentleman. As with the recording from Chateavallon 1972, the gentleman prefers to have very limited distribution of this concert. He would love to see some of the other collectors of Zeuhl start to share some of the hidden treasures that they have.

Here are the liner notes for this concert:

  1. That tape must be the first recording of "Hhaï" !

  2. Hey Marc,

    Any links?

  3. Not yet. The originator of the tape does not want it in general circulation just yet.... However, some Henry Cow from the same festival will be posted on DIME soon, I think.

  4. As has been said before : "reciprocity is most welcome"...

  6. actually the first recorded (available) version of Hhai is from Beynes May 10th 1975....

  7. OK, haven't even heard about that boot ! Is the version on Beynes as long as on the 22-05 Orléans, lasting for around 17 mins ? Seems like they shortened the piece before the recording of the official LIVE album in June.

  8. yes, the version from Beynes is 15:33 mins...i just put it up on DIME for you all...

  9. Illuminate me please. What is the point of advertising the exclusivity of those bootleg recordings on a "not to be shared list"??

It smacks of snobbishness. If something is not to be shared don't wave it under everyone's nose.

"the gentleman prefers to have very limited distribution of this concert. He would love to see some of the other collectors of Zeuhl start to share some of the hidden treasures that they have."

Is this supposed to act as a carrot to attract those who are coveting their precious tapes?

Or is it to make jealous those who cannot get their hands (and ears) on it because "the gentleman prefers to have very limited distribution" to the exclusive few deemed worthwhile? Really silly horse shit.

Why even advertise its existence? Just keep it to yourselves.

It all seems so childish considering the fact that Vander has all of the tapes he needs and just isn't motivated to release them.

And Marc, I hope you get to say Hi to Keith at the RIO fest. I mentioned you to him last week before he left for Europe. Have a great time.

  10. Fred, don't kill the messenger ... at least, not yet.

These are the ground rules that this gentleman set up and wants to play by. I think that he will eventually relent and provide a wider distribution for these rarities. Already, the people on DIME have seen some of the treasures that this guy has found (Troc FM 72, Henry Cow Grenoble 75, Jack Bruce band 75, etc). And there are plenty more to come.

But Magma is a different story. The gentleman, being aware that there are other French collectors out there who are holding on to Magma rarities, hopes to use these newly-discovered Magma tapes as a carrot in order to get these other people to start opening up and sharing. He has asked to use the various Magma-related blogs as an advertising medium.

You may agree or disagree with this strategy. But, these are the facts right now. The best way to get a hold of this new music is to share something rare yourself. Do you have something like the Wetlands 1999 concert? A rare video? Share, make it known, and I am sure that this gentleman will share with you. His main theme is Reciprocity.

it all will come to everybody in the end.. imagine all those years before DIME ? didn't you improve your collection within the last 3 years by let's say double to triple ??
you know i share my stuff but i am hoping for more "tresors" to open... although i doubt it given what i see as a reaction in the french magma circles...I wished it would be the grateful dead !!

  12. Hey Marc,

I just spent an hour composing an answer to you on this blog but it caused Firefox to crash before I could send my witty reply. Here is the gist of it:

You show me yours and I'll show you mine....

I disagree with your "strategy" and so what. Everyone must play out their games, as necessary, or as dictated by bio-chemical processes beyond their control. :)

"Do you have something like the Wetlands 1999 concert? A rare video? Share, make it known, and I am sure that this gentleman will share with you. His main theme is Reciprocity."

I put my foot in my mouth and broke my own rule of mentioning, in public, a show that is not yet in circulation and for which I do not have permission to share. My apologies if I caused you some extra salivation.

I will explain, to what Marc is referring, for the umpteem and a half magmoids that follow this thread:

I recently let it be known, prematurely on Dime, that I have a copy of Magma's set at Wetlands on VHS. It is, woefully, not the complete show but you are all going to want it anyway. I attended the show with a number of friends, one of which has videotaped numerous shows - Magma, Present, Thinking Plague. It is an impressive list (though there is NO list). I am in the process of convincing him to allow me to transfer and release some of his great library. To tell you the truth I had forgotten that I had this copy. But here is the catch - he has the master but is reticent to share it. He sent copies to Seventh 10 years ago and has a fear that Vander will send zombies to "Kohntark" him if he puts it out in public. Once I convince him, and trust me, I will, I will share it on Dime. There is no reason to poison the pool with my inferior copy and worse, to disrespect a good friend's wishes.

I know we all "want it all now" but once it is up on Dime there is no doubt that it will be snagged, compressed and put up on half a dozen blogs plus the UTube for those who don't care about the Reciprocity of sharing lossless shows with others via their bandwidth. I have more important things to worry about, as we all do. So as hanwaker (Hello hanwaker!) so wisely points out - it will all come to everybody in the end. And might I add I hope he eventually gets the Dead show he really, really, really wants. ;)

OK, Marc, I just reread this and think I understand now.

"But Magma is a different story. The gentleman, being aware that there are other French collectors out there who are holding on to Magma rarities, hopes to use these newly-discovered Magma tapes as a carrot in order to get these other people to start opening up and sharing."

It is a FRENCH thing. LMAO!

    Love ya,

  14. An update - Worlds in collision or the univers in alignment?

The moment I hit "Post Comment" on my last rant the phone rang and, I kid you not, it was my good friend the videographer! Talk about coincidences.

The situation is this: the dozens if not 100+ shows he has videotaped were all done on a Hi8 video camera and transferred from that camera to VHS. The camera needs to be serviced and it will be a few months before does this.

He is as neurotic as any of us and insists that they be transferred from his original camera. Probably a good idea anyway, if possible. Believe it or not he is computer-phobic and has no intention of getting one anytime soon. Re: the Magma video at Wetlands - once he repairs his camera he will bring it to my place and we will transfer it and a few choice others to my computer. I will then horde them forever. Just kidding! I will readily give them back to the great trading community. He lives a state away from me (me - Noo Yawk and he, like Marc, is in Noo Joizee) but we speak 2 or 3 times a week on the phone and have done so for years. We are real music buddies. There is no doubt in my mind that sooner or later you will all be seeing this one.

He also reminded me that he would ask permission from the bands he videtaped 98% of the time and sent copies to their home addresses, anywhere in the world. He has has quite a few thank you letters from the likes of Robert Wyatt (he videotaped the Wyatt tribute at the Knit), etc. Very cool!

Well the Magma is in that 2% range. The night of the show he hesitated to begin filming because he did not get to ask permission. He only began filming when he noticed a tripod at the back of the club. Another fan shot the entire show! We did speak to Christian & Stella after the show and he said he would send them a copy - but did not.

He went on about getting them a copy first but I think I made my point - retelling my James MacGaw story. So that is where it stands. I will keep you updated and coax him along to repairing his beloved Hi8 camcorder.

    Frd/zkr

    PS
I am with Olvator on this one - sharing mp3s of shows when lossless versions exist is irresponsible.

this all sounds very good indeed and yes i hope you can get some of these things out .. and believe me.. i have .. as many others ...taped more than a dozen magma show without "asking for permission" but i know their gentleman switchdoctor on the sbd saw the action many a times and never made anyone of us to stop it.. i know it is different with videos but.. christian vander is no NO to nice magma material.. he gets copies in the end as well.....
    cheers

and the GD community taught me a lot of lessons the magma community still has to learn... no kidding this time on my side
